Founder of Yoga in Daily Life, Paramhans Swami Maheshwarananda says: The more wise you are, the more humble you become; the more spiritual you are, the kinder you will be. Free yourself from the prison and don’t imprison yourself again by thinking negatively and talking badly of others. Some are in the prison of their emotions and others are in the prison of bad thoughts. Everyone is caught within something. Of the many kinds of pollution in this world, mental pollution is the most destructive. To be free from all this is called 'liberation'. Free yourself from that inner prison. Regular sessions of 'Deep Relaxation' help to relieve physical and mental tension. Through the process of Deep Relaxation one progressively relaxes the musculature of the body and surrenders unpleasant, stressful thoughts by using the breath. In Yoga it is often said that an 'overloaded' subconscious is the greatest contributing factor in mental-imbalance. A healthy zest for life expressed creatively, with clarity, care and compassion, produces a positive mind-set, whereas an egoistic and unscrupulous expression has the opposite effect. Addiction of any kind is physically and mentally destructive. A helpful support in overcoming addictions is to do something positive for others. Positive expression of life through a commitment to work for the betterment of all society (which includes ourself), is a first-step in regaining mental equilibrium. By overcoming cruelty towards ourselves and others, our capacity for self-love and collective responsibility grows. Self-Enquiry Meditation is another tool used in regaining mental health, as this technique encourages self-reflection. To look honestly at our life and discover what thoughts, habits and emotions create suffering. This Self-Enquiry meditation naturally paves the way to rediscover and develop those thoughts, habits and expressions that allow us to maintain our mental equilibrium, discarding those habits that bring us down. |
