On a daily basis, qualified Yoga in Daily Life instructors around the world volunteer their time and skills to individuals or various disadvantaged groups conducting classes in Yoga stretches, Relaxation, Meditation and Visualization, with the aim of providing an equal opportunity for all people in the wider-community so that they may enjoy the benefits of enhanced physical and mental health. In Australia, examples of where volunteer Yoga Teachers take their classes include in Australia include: for wheelchair bound students of Balmain High Support Unit; The NSW NORTHCOTT Society for Crippled Children; The Pediatric HIV Unit of the Sydney Children’s Hospital; Adults with mental disabilities at Sunshine Homes Sydney; Aged Care Respite Centre in New Farm, Brisbane; Toowong’s Private Hospital; Brisbane City Council’s GOLD (Growing Old & Living Dangerously) program for senior citizens; Brotherhood of St Lawrence aged-home in Melbourne; DEAC Disability Employment Action Centre for people with acquired brain injury and FACS Family & Community Services for individuals suffering from depression, anxiety, physical and/or mental abuse, in Melbourne. For several years volunteer Yoga in Daily Life instructors have given motivational talks and classes for the Encore group of women with breast cancer, on how to apply the Yoga principles and practices to help manage the symptoms of their condition, such as stress and diet. Other examples of where Yoga in Daily Life instructors have successfully shared their skills includes offering private tuition to a Paraplegic Athlete who specifically asked for a yoga program on how to calm the mind in order to improve performance. Other Yoga in Daily Life instructors give private classes for terminally ill patients in palliative care or rehabilitation at the North Shore Hospital in Sydney. Raising community awareness on issues pertaining to World Peace, Ethics and Sustainability is a primary objective of Yoga in Daily Life. This motivation coupled with an extensive involvement in the community has cemented firm networking relationships over the years with other non-governmental, charitable organisations which have included: Oxfam Community Aid Abroad, Amnesty International, World Society for the Protection of Animals, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Australia, Tibetan Refugee Children’s Project, the Vegetarian Society, Red Cross Australia, OzGreen, the Wilderness Society, Animal Liberation, Greenpeace and UNICEF Australia as well as many others. The Yoga in Daily Life Associations worldwide exist specifically to benefit the wider public by fostering physical, mental, social and spiritual health via the system of Yoga and Meditation it teaches – that is,Yoga in Daily Life. Its further aims are to support and strive for world peace and human rights through tolerance, respect and understanding regardless of national, religious and cultural differences, and where possible, to offer humanitarian aid for peoples in need, particularly those in disaster areas. |
