Advancing Global Health - Yoga in Daily Life at United Nations Conference for NGOs PDF  | Print |
Written by Bhakti

Advance Global Health was the theme of the 63rd Annual United Nations DPI/NGO Conference, held in Melbourne, Australia, August 30 - September 1, 2010.

More than 1,600 participants and 350 NGOs from 70 countries gathered to collaborate, network and exchange best-practices, information and narratives on the challenges and progress made in the global quest for achieving the MDGs. There are 8 Millennium Development Goals declared in 2005 by world leaders as necessary to achieve by 2015. Although with just five years left to reach the goals set for child health, women’s health and the continuing fight against HIV/AIDS and other infectious diseases, it is clear that progress achieved so far, is not what everyone hoped it would be 10 years ago.
Read the final outcome document, the conference Declaration.

Contemplation on the Meaning of Asana PDF  | Print |
Written by Bhakti
The word meaning of asana is posture and yet posture is not physical alone, as there is the inextricable psychological and emotional link. Just consider what takes place during the practice of any yoga pose and observe the influence of the mind and emotions.

In Patanjali's Yoga Sutra II.46 the great sage defines posture as sthira and sukham – it must be firm and comfortable. The posture of the body and the mind during the practice of yoga and meditation, should be steady and at ease.

We may take this reflection of asana even further and consider what stance or posture we take in life:  the attitude we adopt towards our surrounding environment and the creatures therein, the stance we take in our approach and communication with others, the attitude we hold when building relationships, our mindset towards helping and serving society. If psychologically and emotionally our posture in life is both firm and at ease, then we can traverse life’s journey smoothly.

Nurturing Personal Growth...Inspiration from Native Forests PDF  | Print |
Written by Bhakti
Recognize that in our society many people describe themselves as having lives that are ‘very full’. In the forest many trees are competing for space and in our lives many activities are competing for space. What can we do to create space for the tree of our health and spirituality, so we may thrive and flourish? Some inspriation may be taken from a recent workshop on the topic of fostering the growth of healthy forests...
One of the key points made by the presenter was that many of our native forests previously logged, are now unhealthy and in a state of imbalance. With the regrowth of the trees being of the same age, they crowd each other out in a process called ‘canopy shyness’. This means that as the trees grow in close proximity, they all compete for space and light but cannot spread their branches wide enough to flourish and broaden in their growth. The result is that all the trees within the forest remain restricted and unable to reach their full potential and the entire ecosystem suffers as a result.
