How to Practise Yoga |

While fitness, flexibility and good health are valuable benefits, the ultimate aim of our Yoga practice is to ensure the body is able to support us in our quest for self realisation and in our service to humanity. In this article we look at some guidelines on how to practise. For success, it is important to practise daily. No two days are the same and it helps to plan a short sequence for the days when you are rushed or unwell. Swamiji, the founder of Yoga in Daily Life, advises that we allocate 20-30 minutes daily for our practice, initially. Advanced yoga practitioners are advised to set aside upto 2 hours for a comprehensive practice.

Iron and Vegetarian Diet |

Do you get enough iron in your diet? Most vegetarians have healthy iron levels if they have a balanced diet with plenty of legumes, whole grains and vegetables. Iron levels in the body depend not only on how much iron is consumed in the diet, but also on the strength of the digestion. When digestion is weak, iron is one of the first nutrients that is poorly absorbed. Iron absorption is increased when iron rich foods are eaten with vitamin C rich foods such as vegetables. Some foods such as broccoli and silver beet are high in both Iron and vitamin C.
Symptoms of iron deficiency are anaemia, excessive menstrual blood loss, learning disabilities, headaches, dizziness, weight loss, poor immunity, and low energy levels. However there are many other causes for these symptoms.

Poor posture and bad habits in movement place undue of pressure on the spine. The resulting muscular tension is a frequent cause of back pain, which may also radiate to other areas of the body, such as the head, neck, arms and legs. This is why each Yoga Asana generally involves some part of the spine in the exercise. Those exercises that include a gentle twist of the spine specifically relax the deep layers of muscles in the back. These muscles connect the individual vertebra along the spine and are very much inclined to hold tension. As these muscles are oblique, they receive immense benefit from gentle twisting exercises.
